SOS Kinderdorf Bangkok

Local report - A BRIEF REPORT ON HOUSE SWISSAIR 1

When the rainy season comes, all the children love to play in the rain. The rain really makes the trees look fresh. The grass is lush around the house. But the rain sometimes makes the ground around each house shift. This makes the cement sidewalks around the house uneven and has caused accidents.  One evening, ‘Ung-Ing’, a young girl, was playing tag with her SOS friends and running around the house when she fell down and hurt her face.  It was not serious, but we do have medical care and have a nurse available for her and the children. The SOS mother worries about accidents very much and we are planning to fix the sidewalk.

Sustainable path
To help cost saving control we have prepared for;
- Kitchen garden: We have improved our soil by cultivating, putting some natural fertilizer in the soil like dry leaves and dungs, deciding where to grow which kind of vegetables (some need strong light, some do not). We plan to grow the vegetables which we often eat such as chili, cabbage, morning glory, pumpkin, gourd, ivy gourd, scallion, coriander, ginger, galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime, lemon and parsley. Especially the herbal ones can be grown easily and hardly be bothered by pest.
- Electric appliance usability and maintenance training: We have provided knowledge for the mothers and our children of how to use household electric appliances in proper ways to save their electricity bill and to keep their appliances in good condition. For example, turn the light off when not in use, use compact fluorescent lamp, use the sun light instead of the light bulb if possible, unplug the electric appliances when not in use, often clean them properly (like refrigerator and fan propeller) and allow hot food to cool off before putting it in the refrigerator.

Children in the Swissair-family house:  Girls 8, Boys 4

At present there are twelve children in this family. Twelve members of them are Amm (18), Cha-Aem (15), Ub-ib (13), Oat (12), Onn (12), Som-Oh (10), Oil (9), Aun (7), Inn (7), Ung-Ing (5), Naay (4) and Aew (4).
The mother of this house is very friendly and polite. She is a good friend to the other families in the village.  At the moment there are a few older children who are going through a difficult time. ‘Ub-Ib’ is one of her children that show difficult behavior. Sometimes the mother gets very tired, but she never gives up. She wants to do the best she can to bring up her children.

Story about Amm:
She is the oldest sister in the SOS family. This year a new chapter in her life began, as she will be going to university after high school. After looking and researching for a year, she chose "King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok" in the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts where she will study product design. The university is about two hours from the village, in Bangkok.  We provide a rental room at an apartment very near to the university for her. She plans come visit her SOS family once a month or during school holidays. She thinks  that living in her own apartment is very attractive, as there is no SOS mother to tell or remind her to do the household work or exercise sheets or any other daily routine.  At the first week she got real home sick, she called to her SOS mother very often.  After the mother’s encouragement she says "I will try my best mom. I want you to be proud of me."

In March, we had a ceremony and put up a new spirit house or in Thai we call “San Phra Phum” in front of the village area. We believe that it will be protect us from bad humans and malevolent. Moreover, we celebrated the grand opening of our new library through a party. We think that the library is a wonderful place for the children to explore the world of literature.

During school summer holidays, the children joined a trip for three days and two nights at “Baansuanauokhai Beach in Rayong province, which is about one hundred and seventy km from the village. On the beach we provided various activities, such as water games, including swimming competitions, races, and tricks.  We always made sure that the children were monitored carefully to insure their safety.

Now the rainy season is starting, but the rain sometimes makes the roof leaky and and it makes the cement sidewalks around the house uneven and has caused accidents.   We are planning to fix it.   With the passing of time, some of the walls of the house have become moldy. The family wishes the walls could be repainted for fresh atmosphere to feel for a loving home environment.

Children in the Swissair-family house:  Girls 4, Boys 6

At present there are ten children in this family. Ten members of them are Boom (19), Bou (16), Boub (14), Bow (12), Bas (11), Bam (10), Bank (7), Book (4), Boss (4) and Bright (1). The mother has lived with them for four years already. She is a clever woman who knows how to deal with each child according to their character. She handles herself well, respects the senior SOS mother and acts with much responsibility.

In 2012 we welcomed a new member to this family. His name is ‘Bright’, a little boy just 1 year and 2 months old. He is the youngest and has become loved by all the children. He is easy to take care of. The mother makes sure the older children always give a warm welcome. It is lucky that ‘Bright’ has a very good SOS mother who has taken care of him since the beginning of his babyhood. She loves him like her own child.

In 2012 one of the children from this family house ‘Boub’, will be 14 years old.  When a child reaches 14 years of age we have to move them from SOS Children's Village Bangpoo to live at SOS Youth House Samutprakarn.  In June 2013, ‘Boub’ will move tot he youth facility. There the adolescent boys learn to become independent young adults and confidently integrated with society.  We had a trial stay at Youth House for him during a weekend last March. He was okay there, but he still needs time to adjust to the new environment.
