Why is the Foundation still called
„Swissair Staff Foundation"?

  • Former Swissair and SAirgroup staff members are still the major donours.
  • Since 1956 until today over 20 Million Swiss Francs have been invested in education projects for needy children around the world.
    The Swissair Staff can look back proudly on this outstanding achievement.

To help a child does not cost the world –
but to the individual needy child it can mean the whole world!

 


In 2016 we celebrated with our foundation the 60th anniversary, the basis to help thousands of children to get a fair chance for a better life. On a monthly basis, we were sharing some stories of the history of the foundation and gave information about currently supported projects. We started with... 1956:

Part 1 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1956: Under the impression of the occurrences in Hungary, some Swissair employees decided to collect money in order to allow young refugees from Hungary an education in Switzerland. This appeal within the company was very successful and a convention was created under the title "Swissair-Staff Support for Hungary". As a first action, some refugees managed to get a job at Swissair. More and more Swissair employees contributed to this project and the founders decided to cooperate with the well-established "Kinderdorf Pestalozzi" in Trogen/Switzerland. After a short while, a first contribution of 10'000.- Swiss Francs could be handed over for the "Hungary-House" in Trogen.


Part 2 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1976: The number of SR-staff donating on a monthly basis a certain amount from their salaries was steadily increasing. This was the basis to start the project "Swissair-House" in a SOS Children Village. Swissair staff as expats in various countries and Swissair staff travelling all over the world were the initial motivation to support the foundation and its objective to allow children in need to attend a school and found a basis for their future life. The foundation started to finance such a house with one carrying mother and 12 orphans in the SOS Children Village in Thailand.


Part 3 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1979: inauguration of the two Swissair-houses in the SOS Children Village Bangkok and one house in the SOS Children Village in Dakar.
One year later: The financing of the water pump kicks off the cooperation with the SOS Children Village in Sferai / Lebanon. "


Part 4 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1983: Start of our support for Sociedade Pestalozzi Sao Paulo, a home of therapy and eductaion for handicapped children - and for the children village of Captain Kurt Bürki in Usthi / India.

Part 5 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1983: The foundation decided to patronise two institution in Switzerland: with regular amounts we support the "Schlupfhuus", a place for children in need in Zurich and a family in Wald/Zurich, specialised in curative education.


Part 6 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1990: After the revolution in Romania, it became obvious that many children's home were in disastrous conditions. With the foundation "Pestalozzi", supported by our foundation, immediate and unbureaucratic support was given in Bucharest and its surroundings.


Part 7 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1993:
The board of the foundation decides to provide support for the renovation, as well as the running cost of the SOD Children village of Bershaf, nearby Beirut/Lebanon. Well known artists of the Zurich "Kunsthaus" redesigned First Class seats and auctioned them. The revenue helped as well to take over the support for an additional Swissair house in the SOS children village in Tirana/Albania.


Part 8 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
1996:
Celebration of the opening of the 16th Swissair house in a SOS Children village, taking place in Tirana/Albania, attended by the Swiss ambassador of Albania, securing an excellent coverage in print media and TV. Some Swissair trainees from Zurich organise a week in the village and construct a playground and do some maintenance work. They collected themselves the necessary funds and material.


Part 9 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
2003:
After a difficult year 2002 with quite some uncertainties, the board of the foundation set the objective to manage the payment for all projects with the same amounts as the previous year. This was possible thanks to the generous donation of the "Urban Werlen Fond"; all committed contribution to the cost of for maintenance and education could be realised. The board decided - thanks to this positive development - to finance Swissair-House Nr 19 in an SOS-children village (Nespruit, South Africa).
First time in the history of the foundation, all donators received a "Thank You"-letter with a confirmation of their contribution.


Part 10 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
2004:
Decision to finance the 20th Swissair-family in the new SOS Children Village in Gandscha / Azerbaijan. Beside supporting the 19 Swissair Families it became possible to finance directly various projects all over the world, with an amount of 180'000.- Swiss Francs. Among the supported projects was as well the Usthi-Foundation. - Our foundation has been once more supported by various sponsors, allowing us to keep the administrative costs below 1%. - Our highly engaged president Gustav Bader steps back after 15 years, Walter Vollenweider takes over.


Part 11 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
2006:
50 years jubilee of our foundation! Thanks to a surpassing loyalty and a remarkable support from all our donators, plus a continuous engagement from all board members, we could jointly help thousands of children all over the world with more than 15 billion Swiss Francs! The general assembly for the jubilee year took place in the "Kinderdorf Pestalozzi" in Trogen/Switzerland, a perfect place to celebrate the event.


Part 12 of our history / 60 Years "Swissair Staff Foundation for Children in Need":
2016: 
At the assembly 2016 we have elected Marcel Hungerbühler as our 5th president, he will take over from Walter Vollenweider. Marcel worked within various Swissair' sales and marketing divisons: he was Country Manager the Philippines, was based in Singapore, in England and finally Route Manager for Asia. His last nine years Marcel was based in Bangalore / India as COO and CEO of Bangalore Airport and in Delhi as COO of Delhi Airport. This spring, Marcel returned to Switzerland. Marcel was all these years member of our board and was therefore always well informed and involved in all decision of our foundation. On the photo you see Marcel visiting the Jivan School (see also our June-edition).
Walty's commitment for our foundation was enormous. The board thanked Walty for all his energy and gave him various gifts from different regions from Switzerland.
